There is no such thing
as an age appropriate hair cut!
I have heard this more than a lot in my 18+ years, and I HAVE HAD IT!!! I had the blessed opportunity to meet a potential client (I promised I would never use names, but it began with a P
), and she regretfully told me she had thought of just quitting getting her hair done altogether because of the Cleveland area‘s lack to do women over 40!!! Yes, they are getting their hair done, but in this cookie cutter mom “do” that transpires into a helmet of a granny “do” that just sits on top of their head with no ability to imaginatively reconstruct once out of the salon doors. This astonished me and saddened me to boot! I will fix this, ONE BEAUTIFUL GRACEFULLY AGING HEAD AT A TIME!
I will start by explaining how not to get stuck in that situation. First if you are in the Cleveland area, come see me at ULTA in Fairview Park! If you are not, let me show you the ropes…
- Firstly, take pictures! Sometimes the best way to tell a stylist what you want is to show them. Don’t take just one picture, take as many as you can find. We as women are always seeing things we like when it comes to hairstyles. If you see someone you like, pull out your handy camera phone, compliment them on a great cut, ask nicely and I bet you could snap a pic of them and make their day by feeling celebrity-ish and admired (who wouldn’t love to feel like that). Find something in a magazine? Tear it out. Like just the color, or section of a cut, rip that sucker out and start an “I LOVE THIS” photo collage. Communication is the biggest roadblock in the client-stylist relationship. Don’t assume your hairdresser will just pick what you want out of thin air, unless maybe they really know you.
- Next, just as much as you want your stylist to listen to you, listen to them…I truly believe the greatest tool a hairdresser has are the two ears on their head and the matter between them. Listen to the responses your hairstylist gives you when you ask for or show them what you want. If what you hear does not match what you want, repeat yourself. Keep doing this until you feel comfortable with what the response is. If you do not feel comfortable with your stylist, LEAVE. Consultations are free, use them. Be picky. Get what you want.
- Furthermore; know you are just as beautiful as ever and age is a word, not a look. You may feel as if you have changed entirely on the outside since the teenage years, but you are still the same spirit on the inside. Stay true to your inner you and don’t compromise at any age. There are however things you should take into consideration, under your hair is the skin. About every 7 years your skin likes to do a little changy-poo on you. Attached to that skin is hair, it will change too. Thank goodness the beauty industry has taken that into consideration as well. There are some awesome shampoos/conditioners that are formulated to take care of some of the dreaded “signs of aging“. Look for Redken‘s new Age Reset. It is in a lavender bottle and just was released last year.
- Finally, like everyone else on the planet, you just want a good haircut. There is no crime in that. Don’t stop until you get it.
